Boundary County Solid Waste

The Boundary County Solid Waste Department is tasked by the Board of County Commissioners with keeping the county clean by collecting and disposing of refuse throughout the county. The Boundary County Landfill is located north of Bonners Ferry on Hillcrest Road, and is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily except for nationally recognized holidays. In addition, there are public collection sites throughout Boundary County for the disposal of household waste, making it easy for local residents and travelers to dispose of litter. With few exceptions, which are noted below, there is no fee for disposal of solid waste.

A cleaner Boundary County is good for everyone, and by knowing the laws and ordinances regulating refuse collection, everyone can do their part to ensure that Boundary County stays clean and green!

The Boundary County Landfill operates under the provisions of a small community exemption of Federal Subtitle D regulations, which limits the amount of solid waste which can be disposed of in the landfill on an annual basis. Boundary County strongly supports recycling, and bins for recycling tin cans, glass, newspapers, electronics (anything that plugs in except televisions), magazines, aluminum cans, rinsed #1 through #7 plastics, film plastics, including bags and cling wrap, and cardboard are available at the landfill and their use is encouraged.

The Solid Waste Department also has three monitored sites located on Kootenai Trail Road in Paradise Valley, at Naples off U.S. 95 and at the junction of Highway 95 and Highway 1, which also accept recyclable materials at no cost.

The more materials are recycled, the longer the Boundary County Landfill can remain open, and the longer it remains open, the lighter the burden on the taxpayer for solid waste disposal.

Holidays observed by the solid waste department are New Years Day, Washington's Birthday, Independence Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day and Christmas Day, and monitored sites will be closed on these observed holidays. These holidays delay normal collection schedules by one day.

The only items for which there are fees for disposal are light demolition and construction debris, $8 per cubic yard, heavy demolition debris, $24 per cubic yard, and large animal carcasses, $24.
